Congress asks Clemens to provide deposition Jan. 26; McNamee Jan. 31.(Sports) - The Virginian-Pilot (Norfolk, VA)

WASHINGTON [bar] Congress asked Roger Clemens to submit to a deposition or transcribed interview Jan. 26, in advance of the House hearing where the pitcher and his former trainer, Brian McNamee, are to testify.

Letters were sent to Clemens, McNamee and three other people Friday by House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform chairman Henry Waxman and ranking Republican Tom Davis. The letters ask the witnesses to meet with committee staff on specific dates leading up to the panel's scheduled Feb. 13 hearing.

McNamee was asked to meet with committee staff Jan. 31. Clemens' former teammate and workout partner, Andy Pettitte, was asked to appear Jan. 30, while another former teammate, Chuck Knoblauch, was invited for Jan. 24. Kirk Radomski, one of The Mitchell Report's key sources, was asked to speak Feb. 1.

Gamez leads by 1 in Bob Hope Classic

PALM DESERT, Calif. [bar] Robert Gamez, in the tournament on an exemption, shot a 5-under-par 67 on Friday to take the lead after three rounds of the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic.

Gamez went to 17-under 198, good for a one-shot lead through 54 holes. Justin Leonard, the 2005 champion, had a 67 to share second place with D.J. Trahan, who shot a third-round 68.

Boo Weekley vaulted into contention with a 10-under 62 that put him at 201.

South Korea shot an 11-under 61 to take a one-stroke lead over France after the first round of the Women's World Cup of Golf in Sun City, South Africa.

Tom Purtzer shot a 10-under 62 to take a one-stroke lead after the opening round of the Champions Tour's MasterCard Championship in Kaupulehu-Kona, Hawaii.

Martin Kaymer shot a 7-under 65 to extend his lead to six strokes after the second round of the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship in United Arab Emirates.

Paterno will meet to discuss future

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. [bar] Penn State's president and athletic director plan to meet with Joe Paterno in the next few months, in part to talk about the 81-year-old coach's future.

Paterno's contract expires after the 2008 season. The 42-year coaching veteran has said recently he could coach at least a couple more years, and perhaps as many as five.

Penn State president Graham Spanier, responding to a question posed Friday at a meeting of university trustees, said he was certain Paterno would return for his 43rd season this fall.

Kentucky offensive coordinator Joker Phillips will become the Wildcats' head coach following Rich Brooks' retirement, though the 66-year-old Brooks has not set a timetable for his retirement.

Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez, who is being sued by West Virginia in an attempt to collect on a $4 million buyout clause in his old contract, received a $287,000 incentive payment from his former school Friday for goals reached during the 2007 season.

Clemson running back James Davis has returned to college more than a week after announcing his intentions to turn pro.

Odom will retire at end of season

COLUMBIA, S.C. [bar] South Carolina coach Dave Odom announced Friday that he will retire at the end of the season.

Odom, 65, has had four 20-win seasons with South Carolina, the last in 2005-06.

Odom, in his seventh season at South Carolina, has a career record of 401-268 in 22 years as coach of the Gamecocks, Wake Forest (1990-2001) and East Carolina (1980-82).

Rockets' Mcgrady likely back today

HOUSTON [bar] Rockets star Tracy McGrady said Friday he'll probably end an 11-game absence, a day after saying his left knee needed more time to heal.

McGrady has been sidelined with a bone bruise, a strained tendon and patellar tendinitis in the knee. He said Thursday he was 'unlikely' to play against the San Antonio Spurs tonight.

But he made it through a nearly two-hour practice Friday and labeled himself '75 percent' ready to face the Spurs.

GUANGZHOU, China [bar] Lindsay Tarpley scored two goals and the United States beat Finland 4-1 to take the lead at the Four Nations Tournament.

Lauren Cheney and midfielder Angela Woznuk also scored for the U.S.

The Americans play China on Sunday.
