ALLEN'S HEAVE LIFTS TAFT POST'S TOP TEAM DEFEATS HUGHES.(SPORTS) - The Cincinnati Post (Cincinnati, OH)

Byline: Post staff report

Taft High School senior guard Roberto Allen sank a half-court shot at the buzzer to give the Senators, ranked No. 1 in The Post's Division II Ohio area boys' basketball poll, a 61-58 win over Hughes on Tuesday night.

Hughes tied the score at 58-58 with 3.8 seconds remaining on two free throws by Chris Andrews.

Following a Taft timeout, Allen took the inbounds pass, dribbled a couple of times and launched his winning shot a step before the midcourt line. It swished cleanly through as the buzzer sounded.

''Believe it or not, it was actually the play we designed during the timeout,'' said Taft coach Eric Thomas. ''It was either he was going to make it from there or at worst we go overtime.''

Allen finished with 14 points, 11 in the second half.

Taft outscored Hughes, 20-9, in the second quarter, thanks to seven points from senior forward Robert Coates, to erase a 15-10 deficit after one quarter and move into a 30-24 halftime lead.

But Hughes, behind nine third-quarter points from Anwar Cooper, outscored Taft, 19-13, in the third quarter to tie the score at 43-43.

Taft then pulled out to an eight-point lead with three minutes remaining before Hughes tied it on Andrews' free throws.
